GO TO SITE! Read about it in the Seattle Journal of Commerce
Dear Wayne,
Greetings from Shanghai. On the long distance flight, I finally found sufficient time to read your book “Installation of Joint Sealants – Standards & Guides” cover-to-cover. This is an excellent book indeed and one dearly needed. The book describes in quite some detail essential considerations for a successful joint sealing operation. As you mentioned in your book, the joint sealing operation is often only considered as an after-thought and consequently not sufficient time is spent on the planning and execution of this important detail. While the installation of joint sealants represents only a minor part of the overall building costs, consequential damages resulting from joint seal failures may be substantial. The book is well written and illustrated – the photos and figures were well selected and are easy to understand. I learned a thing or two about swing stage operation (however, not surprising, since my experience with swing stages is rather limited – I recently had more experiences with bamboo scaffoldings in Asia – these would make an interesting chapter in your book, if you ever were to take it global).
The only area of improvement regarding the readability of the book is its layout, i.e., a more consistent use of highlighted, bolded, italics, etc. text would help the reader in finding his/her way through the book structure.
Otherwise, this book is crème-de la crème, as they say in France.
Best wishes – and looking forward to your ASTM paper.

Thanks for the nice comment. We really do believe in the “team” concept and want our subcontractors to be successful. I believe we accomplished this goal together. You should be proud of your field staff as they have done a great job out here and are a trade we don’t have to worry about with safety, job coordination, etc. It has been a pleasure working with you again (16 years ago) Wayne and look forward to a successful completion of this project.

Wayne - Thanks again for coming down. It was nice to shake your hand again.
You quickly restored faith in the facade consultant and architect that the sealant joints will be top notch. Ryan appreciated getting a copy of your book as well, it was a nice touch. Hopefully we both can find some new projects in Portland or elsewhere to do together. …keep thinking positive, and the opportunities will come.

We are pleased to pass on congratulations on a job well done from the Owner and various Tenants. We along with WRC feel that it is very important to continue the strong relationships we have built on the project. WRC; Paula Cutler or Garrit Pillie, will be contacting your companies directly for warranty and/or maintenance requests.
You should be proud of this accomplishment as you have been selected out of a huge list of subcontractors. Please pass this on to your tradesmen and keep up the good work.

Gentlemen: The Sound Transit project is now complete and today is my last day dealing with the job. I have kept Daryl and Matt totally informed on all aspects of the job
and specifically in matters performed by your organization. Each of these gentlemen will continue to assist with the “close out” of your subcontract.
I wish to thank each of you for your full cooperation and assistance during the course of the construction, and to recognize that it was your participation and workmanship
that helped to bring the project to a successful completion.

United Rentals Corporation has had a long standing working relationship with United Professional Caulking. It has been a pleasure working with the entire staff over the past ten years.
U.P.C. has been extremely professional in all aspects of business, something that needs to be applauded in the construction industry. With today’s Economy and Working Environment it has been quite taxing on everyone, it nice to know that they remain resilient through the hard times due there quality and competitiveness.
I only wish that everybody @ United Rentals had as loyal and easy going staff as UPC does.
This letter is being sent in recognition of how valuable it is to maintain a great working environment in all lines of business.
I would highly recommend their services and products as I know that they stand behind their company with the upmost integrity.

On behalf of the Local, I want to thank you for your donation of PCC tools
to the apprentices that will be competing at the contest in Las Vegas.
The apprentices were extremely grateful and had a chance to use them during
their 3-days of warm up/practice this week. Getting an entire set of
pointing and caulking tools was a big deal to them. After spending 3 days
with Terry this week at the training center, I think our boys have a good
chance!

I want to extend my thanks to you and UNIPRO for the great work out here at the Ninth and Jefferson Building. We got off to a pretty bad start with the weather and had to wait it out for quite a while. But, UNIPRO came in with an amazing display of force and manned up to complete floor blocks of sidewalk caulking in one day. I am sure we will cross paths again; see you on the next one.

I wanted to take a moment to express to you how much I enjoyed working with United Professional Inc. I can see that this is in a large part because James is very valuable and represents your company and your name very well. He presents himself very professionally and has his company and the general contractor foremost in his mind while conducting business. UPI’s finish product on this job is more than satisfactory and efficiently done, especially considering how we had to work the schedule. UPI understanding and professionalism toward our schedule on this job was very much appreciated.
I look forward to working with James in the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him.

MIRABELLA PROJECT
I have to give you some extra credit. Over the weekend I found myself caulking some trim at my house, when a little voice started chirping in my ear not to “pull the bead”. While your man James Johnson is in no danger of being put out of work, my finished product is better due to your unrelenting passion for the business.
Thank you again for all the work that United Professionals Inc. put into making the Mirabella project here in Seattle a success. Your involvement from the start allowed us to identify problem areas and focus everyone’s attention where we needed it. As always, your crews did a great job in the field. They worked safe, they coordinated with other trades and their work was done professionally. With over a quarter million square feet of exterior wall, it felt good to know we had the best in the business working on it.
I personally appreciate UPI taking care of the signature curtain wall rotunda on the corner of Denny and Fairview. This is a key design element of the project and it felt could to know that it was done right.
Thanks again, and I’ll see you on the next one.

I would like to thank United Professional for their outstanding performance at Swedish Orthopedic Institute. The Swedish project was clad in a very complex skin system designed to deflect vertically under floor loading and rack horizontally in a seismic event. This differential movement had our design team, consultants, and subcontractors baffled as to how to deliver a warranted, water tight building to the client. It was not until United Professional was on board that a solution that everyone could agree on was discovered for a particularly troublesome 3” wide expansion joint.
United Professionals’ performance and attention to detail in the field led by James Johnson was also stellar. The tooled joints completed by your team were so far superior to those done by others on the project that it lead our architects to believe that a different sealant was being used – when in fact it was only a difference in the quality of craftsmanship.
Working with United Professional was a great pleasure, and an experience that I hope to repeat on future projects. Thank you for all of your hard work.
Sincerely,

I’m not sure if we have met or not, but I just wanted to relay my input in regards to your man Troy Johnson. I’ve been dealing with Troy for the past several months here at the Olivian. Troy has met and exceeded all my expectations for his scope of work on this project.
He is a pleasure to deal with and I never have to talk to him twice about completing his work. The City of Seattle inspector (Eric Lundstrom) has been very impressed with the quality of work that Troy has done. I feel that Troy deserves a much earned pat on the back and look forward to completing this project with him and hope that I have the chance to have his help on future jobs.

Usually in this industry people are called out for the errors and lack of willingness to do a quality and timely job. So, I wanted to take a moment to let you know that Lorin has done such high quality work, that even our architect described it as the best caulking he had ever seen. Rarely have I come across a person who was as willing and able to handle their work with such professionalism. He neither comes up with excuses, or avoids the work that needs to be done. It has been a pleasure working with him for this project and I felt that you ought to know that you have a high quality employee in Lorin. Both I and others have been impressed by both his work and his work ethic.

[On the 600 Broadway project]
The building owner recommended I call Wayne Belcher of Uniproseal Corporation who has done maintenance on their building and who is working across the street on the Swedish Orthopedic Institute. Wayne called in all his favors with friends in the glazing business to help me out of my pickle.
Wayne has managed to cobble together a mix of companies to get the job done. Wayne has come through for me and delivered excellent customer service along the way.
I would never have thought to call a caulker to find a glazier. This tactic is not recommended, but if you need a caulker, please give Uniproseal a call.

Subject: Letter of Recommendation
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to this letter to provide evidence that United Professional has performed exemplary for Turner Construction at the Washington State Penitentiary Close Security Compound – Phase I.
United Professional’s contract value for this project is $1,184,065. Throughout the project UPI has demonstrated superior quality of workmanship and the ability to fulfill all scheduling needs. In addition to being a valued asset to the project UPI has been requested to perform other scopes of work that normally would be other trade work. UPI has performed the extra work without impacting the original contract work performance or schedule.
I strongly recommend UPI for any type of sealant, restoration or fire safing job without reservation.

I wanted to let you know about United Professional, a caulking company that has performed very well for us here in Seattle and has recently begun working in Portland. Their owner, Wayne Belcher, said he would be interested in pursuing work with Turner in Portland. They have done both large and small projects either directly contracted with Turner or as a second tier sub to the Curtainwall sub on the job. Projects include: Qwest Field, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Marriott Waterfront Hotel, 2200 Westlake, and the Washington State Penitentiary to name a few. Several Turner references here are available if you need any. Contact info below.

I wanted to thank you for Unipro's professional performance waterproofing
the Denny Way blade signs, and ST and WT awnings. Thank you also for the
timely quotes.
Unipro was always ready and standing by to do the waterproofing. This was
very helpful to me considering the difficult scheduling of the numerous
trades involved and the repeat trips necessary due to the challenging
sequencing. Unipro always performed their work in a timely manner. This was
largely in part to James Johnson. He did a great job of coordinating with
Turner and offered helpful suggestions. On a personal note, James was very
friendly, personable and brought a sense of humor to the job.
Thank you.

We would like to invite UNIPRO and DOW to give your sealant seminar lunch presentation at our office. We understand this session will require two hours and includes a combination of sealant chemistry offered by DOW in addition to best practices regarding sealant installation from UNIPRO. We also understand single and staged sealant joint installation will be covered and that AIA credits are available through DOW. We will have about fifteen people at this session.
Many of our staff have expressed a keen interest in this presentation. We are a long time champion of DOW products and appreciate their insight on sealant chemistry and etc, however, many of our newer construction and design staff could benefit from your insight to field installation best practice and your insight on the failure mechanisms you have observed.
We have Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday available from the week of August 13 forward. We are located at 701 Dexter Avenue North, Suite 301 in Seattle, 98109.
Look forward to hearing from you.

"The Sealant Manual is a wonderful resource -- one of the more pleasant to read reference manuals out there, with visuals and pictures in a well-laid out visual style that speaks to the design professional, the craftsperson, as well as your average Joe homeowner. But, most importantly, it contains a wealth of information. The chart on page 14 alone was worth it! Thank you, Wayne, for your work in summarizing all that went into this resource. I would say it will sit at a permanent spot on my desk, except that I've borrowed my co-worker's copy and still have to get my own!"
